Donald Cerrone provides update on eye after loss to Tony Ferguson

Over the weekend, in the middle bout of the UFC 238 main card, Donald Cerrone stepped into the Octagon with streaking lightweight contender Tony Ferguson.

This bout was widely expected to capture the card’s Fight of the Night honors, and in the end it did just that. Unfortunately, it did end with a degree of controversy, as Cerrone was deemed unfit to continue fighting between the second and third rounds.

All because he blow his nose.

Doing so is a major no-no for those with nose injuries, and Cerrone proved why. Seconds after he cleared his sinuses, his right eye puffed up like a frightened blowfish. Then it was completely closed.

“When the nose is blown, air is forced through the crack [in the nose] and gets underneath the skin,” said Dr. John Neidecker, a sports medicine specialist and vice president of the Association of Ringside Physicians (via ESPN). “Because of all the swelling of the soft tissue and blood, the air is then trapped.”

Despite the fact that Donald Cerrone looked like he was incredibly rough shape, he recently confirmed Neidecker’s comment, explaining that his swollen eye was due to little more than trapped air. His orbital bone is intact, as is the rest of his face.

Cerrone updated his fans on his injuries on his official Instagram account on Tuesday.

I’m in Good Health. Thanks for all the message and concerns. Only air was in my eye. No broken bones nor cracked or broken orbital. Sitting and waiting for the Rematch or next fight 🤠

‘I’m in Good Health,” the fan favorite wrote. “Thanks for all the message and concerns. Only air was in my eye. No broken bones nor cracked or broken orbital. Sitting and waiting for the Rematch or next fight.”

As Donald Cerrone suggests, there’s been some talk of a rematch with Tony Ferguson. Time will tell if this is the direction the UFC decides to go, or if the victorious Ferguson will finally get his long-awaited lightweight title shot.

Stay tuned for further updates on all of that as details emerge.
