Daniel Cormier says Cain Velasquez will be a champion again
Currently, Daniel Cormier is the reigning UFC heavyweight champion. But with an end in sight, he won’t hold that label forever.
Training with Cormier for the majority of his professional MMA career has been the former two-time heavyweight king of the UFC, Cain Velasquez.
After a lengthy hiatus, Velasquez is set to make his highly anticipated return this Sunday night at UFC Phoenix when he takes on Francis ‘The Predator’ Ngannou.
Of course, Cormier has plenty of interest in this bout as it will see his teammate look to get right back in the thick of things in their division.
But after three years away from the Octagon, what can we expect from Velasquez?
“You’re going to see vintage, you’re going to see the best,” Cormier said on The MMA Hour. “Nothing has changed. He is still as good, still as fast. He still can wrestle, as well. You have to remember, this whole time off he’s been helping me the whole time.
“He will be the champ, very, very soon. As soon as I’m out of there he will be the champ. The only issue with that is, the UFC has to know, now Cain is healthy and they can trust him because he will be around for a while.”
For Velasquez, his last bout came at UFC 200 when he earned a dominant first-round TKO over Travis Browne. Since then he’s been scheduled to rematch Fabricio Werdum at UFC 207 but was unable to due to injury.
Cormier, on the other hand, was hoping to retire by his 40th birthday in March but because of injuries of his own, that is looking unlikely.
Do you think Velasquez can reclaim the heavyweight title?
