Dana White wants Jon Jones-Daniel Cormier trilogy at heavyweight, but willing to do 205

LAS VEGAS – It’s another fight week for Daniel Cormier, and he just can’t seem to escape the mention of Jon Jones.

As he heads into his rematch with Stipe Miocic (18-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) at UFC 241 on Saturday, heavyweight champion Cormier (22-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) has been flooded by the media with questions regarding light heavyweight champion Jones (25-1 MMA, 19-1 UFC) and a potential trilogy fight. Both Cormier and Jones said that if they fight for a third time, it would be at light heavyweight.

Speaking to MMA Junkie and other reporters Tuesday, UFC president Dana White said he’d rather see them fight at heavyweight, but is willing to make it at light heavyweight if that’s what they want.

“I want that fight at heavyweight so bad,” White said. “They won’t do it. Not only has Jon said no, Cormier has said no because Cormier doesn’t want to beat him at heavyweight. And I was just like, ‘If you beat him at heavyweight, you can just fight him (again) at 205. We’ll probably watch that fight 10 times if you guys want to fight 10 times.’ They won’t do it.”

Jones handed Cormier his first pro loss, defeating him via unanimous decision at UFC 182. The two rematched when Cormier was light heavyweight champion, after Jones was stripped of the title, which resulted in a second-round knockout for Jones at UFC 214, who recaptured the belt. The win was then overturned when Jones tested positive for Turinabol, and Cormier was reinstated as champion.

That left the door open for a potential trilogy in what is projected to be one of the biggest fights in UFC history. The two men have a history of bad blood, but White said he has nothing but respect for what both fighters have achieved in their careers.

And he’ll make the fight happen at light heavyweight if that’s what they want. After all, he thinks he and everybody else would watch, regardless of the weight class.

“Do I think that fight needs to happen? I don’t,” White said. “But do I think it should, and do I think people want it? Absolutely.

“Listen, I’ve got Jon Jones, who’s the greatest ever. You’ve got Cormier, also one of the greatest ever. Both been champions forever. I’m not gonna (expletive) fight with them. If they want to fight at 205, I’m not gonna fight with them. Whatever. Two of the biggest kings ever in the history of the sport, if that’s what they want, that’s what they get.”
