Deontay Wilder says he wants to kill an opponent in boxing ‘because it’s legal’

Deontay Wilder is set to return to the ring this Saturday against Dominic Breazeale where he is looking to defend his WBC heavyweight title.

And for the second fight in a row, Wilder has doubled down on his claim to kill someone in the ring. Before the Tyson Fury fight, the champion said he wants a body on his record. Now, the American is taking it a step further for this fight.

“His life is on the line for this fight… and I do mean his life. I’m still trying to get me a body on my record… Dominic Breazeale asked for his,” Deontay Wilder said to the media (h/t independent). I didn’t go seek him, he seeked me. So if it comes, it comes. This is a brutal sport, this is not a gentleman’s sport. I keep saying this is not a gentleman’s sport, we don’t ask to hit each other in the face, but we do anyway.

“And you can ask any doctor around the world, he’ll tell you the head is not meant to be hit. Anybody can go and, on this particular time, we have bad blood against each other,” he continued. “This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time. It’s legal, so why not use my right to do so?”

Meanwhile, just a few weeks back, Deontay Wilder told Breazeale that he should “make some funeral arrangements” for after their fight. Since the 33-year-old has said these comments, he has received a ton of backlash, including from Eddie Hearn who said: “it was bad for the sport”.

Ultimately, Wilder is looking to get back into the win column on Saturday after fighting to a controversial draw to Tyson Fury in his last fight.
